What gives insulated trailers a huge advantage over curtainsiders is medical vaccine cargo, which requires fragile cargo Lv1 and ADR class 6. Now this is where the money is; I'm able to earn between 75 and 95 €/km transporting vaccines (usually somewhere in the mid to upper 80s), and it's a very common cargo type too.
Upgrade the trailer to an B-double and it again increases profits to 2750 on average. Sure it isnt much they make and they will never be as good as in terms of earnings but none the less hired hands experiences positive effects of trailers. Ontop of this they will also level up and as such earn more per trip.

In the lenght, it is worth to get your own trailer if you go for earn more money - But of course, first the little better income may have pay the price for the trailer before it gives surplus to have it, and that will takes long times (many jobs) before the little better income have earn in what the trailer
It is no more realistic to drive in some of the Klass scenarios (earn $100 in a day after costs) than it is the vanilla game, earning $25k a day.
